Whenever a prominent honors show approaches, there’s always an outcry for the addition of new categories to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the spirits of enthusiasts with niche passions.
A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. So would board games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. But it is a necessary evil within the realm of video games, showing incredible range they barely qualify a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types successfully include numerous genres, allowing placement for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game got overlooked completely that year
- Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
- Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
- Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games count as most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for over a decade.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles for the title of highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting across multiple categories.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
