Toy Story 5 Trailer Pits Woody and Buzz Versus a Digital Device

It has been 30 years since the first Toy Story movie debuted, establishing the animation giant as a major film company and introducing viewers to iconic figures like the cowboy doll (the actor) and the space ranger (the voice talent), who are now famous worldwide.

Coming in 2026, the next chapter is set to arrive. The first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 landed this week, offering a brief look into the plot but keeping viewers curious how it will address the ending of Toy Story 4.

Bonnie's New Toy: A Frog-Shaped Tablet Frightens the Gang

In the teaser reveals Bonnie — who inherited the toy collection when he grew up — getting a latest plaything, one that alarms Woody, Buzz, and the crew. She acquires her first tablet computer, and she is thrilled about it.

Presumably, the amphibian-inspired device will animate just like the rest of her playthings. Still, the toys seem to view it as a threat intending to supplant them, which it likely will.

The Cowboy's Comeback: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4

One thing the trailer doesn't touch on is what the sheriff is back with his companions in Bonnie's room. The finale of Toy Story 4 depicted him embark on a new adventure with the shepherdess (the actress), traveling with a fair and helping giveaway items locate loving owners.

Certainly, the filmmakers will address the consequences of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Witnessing him show up in the familiar setting unexpectedly is a little strange, however. It also makes us wonder whether his partner will have come back with Woody. And where is the stuntman toy (the star)?

Connections from the Previous Film

Fortunately, some elements are carrying over from the prior film. The final act the cowboy did before setting off for his fresh path was pass his symbol of authority to the cowgirl (Joan Cusack), leaving her in charge of Bonnie's bedroom. In the teaser shows the insignia attached to her outfit.

It is hoped she is still the driving force among the group.

Toy Story 5 debuts on June 19, 2026.
