Van de Ven Brace Ends Everton's Run at Brand New Stadium

Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Spurs prolonged their winning streak in away games in the top division and handed Everton their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to put their strong form at risk, and they were unable to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the scores a short while after the defender's opener, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, failed to convert a handful of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of fine saves to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, advising Craig Pawson to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the official ruled that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves the manager's side into third place in the Premier League, a handful of points off north London rivals and leaders the Gunners.

Everton stay in 14th position and sit half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Following a uninspiring weekday performance in the European competition against the French side, where they mustered a only two shots on target, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball toward the face of goal for an free the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - added his next goal in added time as he rose above the England keeper to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defensive duties, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo handled superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by Everton.

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have worn off slightly and fans flocked to the exits after Sarr's third for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a major concern for the manager, but their striker situation are.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' two established strikers - had scored just a single goal combined before Sunday's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that miserable tally on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was epitomized when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, despite having space and time to readjust for a simpler shot that would have challenged Vicario.

The substitute, too, failed to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.
